Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum has agreed an extension to the red line of the Dubai Metro which will connect it to the site of Expo 2020. The extension will add an extra 7 stations to the line over a distance of 15km.
The extension will start from the Nakheel Harbour and Tower Metro station and will go through areas including the Gardens, Discovery Gardens, Jumeirah Golf Estates and Dubai Investment park – all areas of heavy residential or industrial use. It is also anticipated that the line will go through Maktoum International Airport.
The project will obviously need to be completed by 2020 to cater to the large number of visitors for the Expo in that year, and it is expected that tenders for the construction will be requested in July 2015 so that the project can start as soon as possible.
