The government of Dubai and the RTA have big long term expansion plans for the extension of the public transport network in Dubai, and the majority of these plans involve the major expansion of the Dubai Metro. The idea is to get a large proportion of the population of Dubai to use public transport in future and to do this the Metro needs to reach out to the wider spread communities that are a little further out of Dubai than the current reach of the Metro network.
Of course the opening of the Dubai Tram network in November 2014 will help with the wider use of public transport in the ‘new Dubai’ area of the Marina and JBR, but those not in such a central location are arguably in greater need of public transport as these communities support those on perhaps lower incomes who are more likely to use public transport.
Some of the communities that are likely to be covered by an expansion of the Dubai Metro network include Academic City and International City as an extension to the green line. This extension will also cover Ras al Khor and Silicon Oasis.
There will also be an extension to the red line at both ends which will then mean that access to the metro can be obtained from Mirdif and the location for the Dubai Expo in 2020.
The plans are far reaching and they are planning 3 phases of introduction going as far as 2030.
